Torch The value of design How we work

“It’s an incredibly exciting time to be working at the intersection of design and business. Paradoxically, just as we seem to be reaching the apex of the age of technology, something old is emerging, reasserting its importance but in an entirely new way — human voices — representing a stunning chaos of culture. An exciting new shift at the fault line of business and human creativity is emerging. The genie is out of the bottle, and nothing’s ever going to be the same.”

A philosopher by training, Michael believes that design can be used to create better businesses. His academic research concerned ideas and norms of objectivity, and he has written and lectured on topics that range from the history and philosophy of science to the study of legal and political theory, psychology and criminal law.

For the last decade, he has brought intellectual rigor to the discipline of design thinking while working with creative teams to deliver effective designs that are clear, simple, and honor the Idea.

In 1996, Michael joined Toronto design studio Anno Domini and was named Creative Director after only 18 months. Three years later, he led the core team of Anno Domini into Aegis, the design consultancy he co-founded in August of 2000.

Over the last 10 years, Michael has consulted to senior management at TD Bank Financial Group, Fidelity Investments, QuebecorWorld, Wood’s Hole Oceanographic Institute, The Thomson Corporation and The Woodbridge Company.

“With each innovation, many anachronisms are born. I believe it is important to distinguish between what is new, what has stayed the same and what is obsolete. Understanding this has a direct impact on the resilience of the business idea and its long-term success.”
